The floor of the late Gordon’s Electrical shop on Portglenone’s Main Street, was originally laid with a slight gradient for ease of sliding large ‘white goods’ towards the door.

Undetectable by customers during the day thanks to an employee who spent his time pushing merchandise back into place, it was nevertheless, not uncommon to see the entire stock pressed hard against the front windows every morning.

“It began to be a problem” said one former member of staff, “as sometimes we couldn’t get the door open in the morning but we eventually solved the quandary by grinding an inch off one side of all the washing machines, fridges and cookers.”

This however, had a knock on effect and for several years, all new homes constructed in the Bann Valley had to have their kitchen floors laid to offset the discrepancy.
